Quelles voies ont été suivies dans l'exploration des enjeux des corps propres et sales, que l'histoire moderne et contemporaine a menée depuis plusieurs décennies ? Les travaux de Mary Douglas ont permis de lancer des réflexions sur la notion de souillure, en particulier dans les études religieuses et anthropologiques, souvent grecques. L'histoire de la médecine a fait définir des conceptions de l’ hygiène et des représentations médicales du corps. Puis on évoquera les recherches relatives à la mise en scène du corps comme lieu d’identité et de pratiques culturelles, et enfin les apports de l'archéologie des lieux de la propreté corporelle.
Clean Bodies and Dirty Bodies among the Romans: some Historiographical Remarks. Modern history has been studying the display and definition of clean and dirty bodies for decades. How did Roman studies tackle such a theme ? The work of Mary Douglas on the perception of pollution has influenced research on religion and anthropology that was mainly centered on Greek antiquity. Medical history has helped defining ancient conceptions of hygiene and medical representations of the body. Likewise the research on body display as manifestation of identity and cultural practice needs to be acknowledged, along with the results of the archaeological work on ancient body cleansing sites.
