À l'occasion du centenaire de l'ouvrage Les règles de la méthode sociologique, le texte qui suit met en évidence certains passages, généralement peu cités, des travaux de Durkheim. La pensée du maître français s'y avère rester pleinement moderne quant à son aspect scientifique et offrir une certaine ouverture vers la post-modernité scientifique. De fait, le « sociologisme » attribué à Durkheim constitue souvent une injuste caricature de son point de vue, essentiellement non sociologiste. La sociologie de Durkheim est même ouverte à la possibilité d'une explication théorique unitaire, valable pour l'ensemble des sciences de l'homme. Par-delà Durkheim, cet essai est une tentative d'élargissement de la portée théorique concernant le normatif. Ce texte cherche aussi à expliciter un certain nombre de lois d'une théorie générale unifiée du mental et du social.
The Rules of the Sociological Method : One Century Later. The article identifies passages from Durkheim, which are not usually considered, on the occasion of the centennial of his Rules of the Sociological Method. It concludes that the French master's scientific thought remains entirely modem, with a certain openness to scientific postmodernity. In fact, the « sociologism » ascribed to Durkheim seems frequently to be an unfair caricature of his perspective, which is essentially an open one. Durkheim' s sociology is even open to the possibility of a unitary theoretical explanation valid for all the sciences of man. The essay is an attempt to move a little beyond Durkheim toward a greater theoretical comprehensiveness regarding the normative, and it makes explicit some laws of a unified general theory that embrace the mental and the social.
