La pyramide des âges est une image utile au niveau de sa structure externe, de sa forme générale, elle est mal adaptée à l'exploitation de sa structure interne, de la comparaison des classes d'âges. Une évolution de population, ou d'un autre phénomène, est exprimée par les différences qui existent entre deux situations ; graphiquement la résolution du problème passe par la visualisation de l'une des deux situations (parfois des deux) et de la différence entre les deux situations, sous forme de cartes ou de diagrammes.
Graphical Representation of Population Structures. The pyramid of ages is a useful image considered from its outer (= external) structure, its general shape, it is badly adapted to the exploitation of its inner structure, of the comparizon of the age-classes. An evolution of population or of any other phenomenon is expressed by the differences existing between two situations ; graphically the solution of the problem goes with the visualisation of one of the two situations (sometimes of both of them) and of the difference between the two situations, in the form of a map or of a diagram.
