Située à quelque 35 km de Dakar, la Communauté rurale de Sangalkam tend à devenir la zone d'extension urbaine privilégiée de la capitale sénégalaise. La proximité de la ville a déjà profondément bouleversé les systèmes de production ruraux, à tel point que le paysan vend ses productions et achète ce dont il a besoin. Cette mutation économique a également été à l'origine de la création de petites industries rurales., Cependant, cette extension de la ville a de profondes incidences sur le domaine foncier : près de 75 % de la SAU sont entre les mains de "propriétaires privés" d'origine urbaine. Cette situation réduit singulièrement les pouvoirs des élus locaux en matière de gestion des terres. Located at about 35 kilometres from Dakar, the rural community of Sangalkam is fast becoming the Senegalese capital's privileged urban extension zone. Proximity to the city has already changed the pattern of rural production to such an extent that the peasant now sells his produce and buys whatever he needs. This economic mutation has also resulted in the setting up small rural industries. However, the encroachment of the city has also had a profound influence on the nature of land holdings. Almost 75 % of the agricultural land is in the hands of "private landlords" from the city. This situation singularly reduces the power of local elected bodies insofar as land management is concerned.
