Beschreibung:
The alternated span in the Italian Renaissance architecture. The instructions for use of the five orders have so far been paid less attention than the origin of the system. The “serlienne” pattern and that of the rythmical span appear as special applications of a style of patterns which the author studies in detail and suggests to name “the alternated span’’. This pattern has its sources in medieval and antique examples (triumphal arches) but is not exact copy. The author shows how these different types have influenced each other and been combined, the evolution of the small scale architecture into the monumental architecture, and the rich and original Venetian solutions.
