Insularity as a dimension of the social question. Although it appears to be a simple question, it is, in fact, an infinitely complex one. We shall examine isolation and its genetic or pathological implications, the overlapping of social roles within small societies and the cultural aspects in which direct interpersonal relationships predominate. When considering the question by means of this three-fold approach, insularity seems to be more a product of society than its producer. It pervades everyone’s experience and contributes to the creation of a common identity for the inhabitants of an island which can shift opposition and defuse certain conflicts. As far as matters of conscience and identity are concerned, insularity is a notion that is always present in the social framework of populations living in an island setting.
Sous une apparence simple, la question posée s’avère en fait infiniment complexe. Seront examinés pour cela l’isolat et ses implications génétiques ou pathologiques, le chevauchement des rôles sociaux au sein des petites sociétés, et les faits culturels pour lesquels priment les relations interpersonnelles directes. A travers cette triple approche, l’insularité apparaît plus comme le produit du fait social que comme son producteur. Imprégnant le vécu de chacun, elle participe à la réalisation d’une identité commune à l’ensemble des habitants d’une île, qui infléchit les oppositions et désamorce certains conflits. Par le détour des consciences, et de l’identité, l’insularité est donc un concept toujours présent dans le champ social des populations vivant dans un cadre insulaire.
