La mythologie insulaire a toujours existé, mais elle s’est transformée au cours de l’histoire des sociétés industrielles ; elle a constitué l’Ile en lieu d’asile, terre promise, “au-delà” mystérieux garant de toutes les félicités ; son exterritorialité permet à chaque migrant de se refaire une virginité. Pourtant la psycho-pathologie insulaire semble s’être exaspérée à partir de la naissance des sociétés dites post-industrielles ; les syndromes de l’enfermement dans un “lieu clos” se sont multipliés, cela au moment même où ces lieux n’ont jamais été si ouverts sur l’extérieur. L’Ile, instance du désir, est devenue le lieu privilégié de toutes les ambiguïtés. La duplexité se rencontre dans tous les domaines : le “nanisme” ou le gigantisme des espèces animales ; la vision “naturiste” de l’île, qui assure le retour aux sources vers le paradis perdu et la vision “colonialiste” de la terre vierge ; contradiction spectaculaire entre l’annulation des distances par les jets et les médias et le nouveau sentiment d’exil et de claustration, qui se traduit en termes de pathologie. Contradiction non moins remarquable entre l’insignifiance des superficies terrestres et l’immensité des zones océaniques “territoriales”.
Essay on the problematic question of island mythology and psychopathology. The myth of the island has always existed, but it has been transformed during the course of the history of industrialized societies, who have represented the Island as a place of refuge, a promised land, the mysterious “yonder” which can guarantee your happiness. As it is beyond all territorial limitations, every migrant can make a fresh start. However, the psycho-pathology of the island seems to have been exaggerated since the birth of the so-called post-industrial societies. Syndromes of being shut up in an “enclosed space” have multiplied, and this is at the very time when these places have become more open than ever to the outside world. The Island as the heart’s desire has become the perfect place for all kinds of ambiguity ? This duplexity can be seen in all areas : dwarfism and gigantism in animal species ; the “naturist” vision of the Island, which promised a return to one’s paradise lost, and the “colonialist” image of virgin land ; spectacular contradiction between the shrinking of distances due to jet travel and the media, and the new feeling of exile and confinement which can be seen in pathological terms. The contrast between the insignificant areas of land and the vast expanses of the oceanic “territorial waters” is no less remarkable.
