Sont examinés ici d'abord les rapports entre le poème du XVIIIème siècle The Lament for Art O'Leary et deux œuvres récentes (un poème puis une pièce) de Dermot Bolger : The Lament for Arthur Cleary. L'article insiste ensuite sur les caractéristiques « modernes » de la pièce et en particulier sur la mise en scène poétique intégrée du thème de l'exil revu et corrigé. Point de pleurs sur l'Irlande ni même sur un destin tragique. L'ouvrier de retour au pays y retrouve les mêmes banlieues usinières grises de naguère et ne reconnaît plus l'Irlande. Il fait la découverte de l'amour et de la violence, refusant celle-ci ainsi que toute compromission. Aux frontières de la mort et de la vie dans cette pièce / poème, qui réorchestre des motifs préexistants, il impose résistance et dignité en un héroïsme privé des anciens repères sûrs du combat séculaire des Irlandais. L'incertitude au bout de la mort a remplacé la nostalgie.
The article considers at first the relations between an 18th century poem, The Lament for Art O'Leary, and two contemporary works (a poem then a play) by Dermot Bolger : The Lament for Arthur Cleary. Then it dwells on the « modern » features of the play, in particular on the poetic integrated staging of the revisited theme of exile. No tears for Ireland nor for a tragic destiny. Cleary, a worker, is back home only to find the same dreary industrial suburbs he has left and never recognizes Ireland. He discovers both love and violence - dismissing violence and compromise at the same time. On the border of death and life in this play-cum-poem that reshuffles preexisting items, Cleary forces refusal and dignity through a brand of heroism stripped of the traditional safe landmarks of the century-old Irish rebellion. Uncertainty has replaced nostalgia as the outcome of death.
