In this paper the numerical simulation of free surface flows in reach scale compound channels is addressed. Accurate prediction of such flows would be of major benefit in both river engineering design and land use planning yet realisation of this goal has thus far proved difficult due to model complexity and the lack of validation data independent of that used in the calibration procedure. In this paper we thus attempt more rigorous validation that seeks to overcome this constraint. In particular, we compare the results from a two dimensional finite element model, TELEMAC-2D, developed by Laboratoire National d ’Hydraulique to a number of unique physical model and field data sets which enable calibration and validation to be undertaken independent of one another.
