A la suite des changements intervenus au niveau de la qualité des eaux après la mise en eau des barrages sur le fleuve Sénégal, des tapis de Potamogeton schweinfurthii sont apparus massivement dans le lac de Guiers. La salinité des eaux a sensiblement diminué, notamment dans la partie sud du lac, du fait que les hauteurs d’eau sont devenues plus élevées et plus stables. Ces facteurs sont favorables au développement de macrophytes aquatiques submergés, notamment de Potamogeton schweinfurthii. La phytomasse des organes non enracinés de l’espèce est de 2,9 tonnes de matières sèches par hectare. Si les tendances actuelles se confirment, l’extension des superficies occupées par cette plante au cours des prochaines années est fort probable.

The phytomass of non-rooted organs of the species represent 2,9 tons of dry matter per ha. If the current trend persists, the species is likely to expand in the years to come. km2
