C'est avec eux, à travers les évocations du chabajom — dépositaire des paroles anciennes et sacrées — que le nouveau-né déjouera les pièges et les dangers des forces maléfiques, lesquelles, dans un combat sans merci, feront tout pour l'anéantir. La mère et le chabajom épuisés par les efforts, en même temps que la communauté angoissée, attendent avec impatience le dénouement de cette lutte cosmique, dans laquelle nous devinons que le Soleil et la Lune n'hésitent pas à se déguiser en Saints pour aider à naître ce petit Tzeltal qui, avec ténacité, s'accroche à la vie.
