According to Plato, the language of his ideal City should work so as to attain the perfection he dreamed about. He believes that the law can only be expressed in terms of order, knowing full well that the law-maker cannot be sure of being obeyed through persuasion alone. Legislative discourse thus appears to serve the demonstration that evil exists within the social group, rather than lead to the road of virtue. So that the words spoken by the citizens should at every instant produce the perfect City, the philosopher indicates how censorship must operate, and vocabulary control, and the networks spreading rumors and lies ; and how political speech(es) should be theatrics.
