The first five years of the North Dauphiné Ecomuseum (1980-1985). The North Dauphiné Ecomuseum, which started in 1980 at Isle-d'Abeau, operated for 13 years before closing. Looking back on its first five years helps to throw light on the key stages in its development : start of the museum association and definition of the project, allowing for the social, political and cultural environment. The prime objective was to give local people a way of reconstructing the history of a specific place (a new town), but the many difficulties encountered from the outset prevented the réalisation of this aim. Though a difficult experience, it nevertheless pinpointed the issue of the role of heritage in building local identity, which has lost none of its immediacy.
L'écomusée Nord-Dauphiné, né en 1980 à l'Isle-d'Abeau, aura connu treize années d'existence avant de disparaître. Revenir sur les cinq premières années de cette institution permet aujourd'hui d'éclairer les étapes fondamentales que jurent la création de l'association et le développement du projet, à la lumière du contexte social, politique et culturel. Né d'une volonté d'offrir à une population la possibilité de reconstruire une mémoire sur un territoire particulier (celui de la ville nouvelle), les nombreuses difficultés rencontrées dès l'origine ne permettront pas l'aboutissement du projet. Une expérience difficile, qui aura, quoi qu'il en soit, contribué à poser de manière aiguë la question du rôle du patrimoine dans la construction identitaire, question toujours très actuelle.
