Disputing the Holy - Land Between the 4th and the 13th centuries, a slow but unrelenting process of spatial exclusion of the Jews took place in the medieval West. Eternally sent back to their henceforth lost fatherland, the Jews of exile were denied all possibility of anchorage, excluded not only from their former land, which was now the land of Christ and thus the land of a sanctity no longer theirs, but from all the regions of the Earth where the apostles had been sent to preach and where holy Christian landmarks had multiplied. These included churches, cemeteries, and even communities of inhabitants of particular kingdoms qualified as « Christian », or indeed « very Christian », such as France and England, where the sovereigns were concerned with purifying the space of the common homeland by fighting heretics and infidels.
Entre le IVe et le XIIIe siècle a lieu un lent mais inexorable processus d'exclusion spatiale des juifs dans l'Occident médiéval. Éternellement renvoyés à la terre de leurs pères désormais perdue, les juifs de l'exil se voient dénier toute possibilité d'ancrage, non seulement dans leur ancienne terre, devenue terre du Christ et donc d'une sainteté qui n'est plus la leur, mais aussi dans tout l'espace de la Terre, où les apôtres ont été envoyés en mission et où les lieux saints chrétiens se sont multipliés : églises, cimetières et même communautés d'habitants de certains royaumes dits « chrétiens » voire « très chrétiens », telles la France et l'Angleterre, où le souverain se préoccupe de purifier l'espace de la patrie commune en combattant hérétiques et infidèles.
