Since 1876, when prehistoric engravings were first recorded by Léopold Chiron, some twenty caves containing paintings or engravings have been found in the gorges of the Ardèche river. These discoveries were crowned by that of the Chauvet cave in 1994. This contribution is not exhaustive but presents the principal caves and the most easily datable ones, if possible within their historical context and with a brief discussion of current knowledge and research.
