ABSTRACT The urban centrality's notion has developed a great deal during last years, in its definitions and action standings : from the intra-urban scale, thinking about a centralizing needs citie, it gets to an inter-urban rank in a geography of the decision, where valorizating images and competition, attraction and development, bring into conflict. Le Mans goodly shows those social and politic transformations, as the whole urban society, by the town center's polarizing dynamics, a space despecialization, an axial development of centrality's bearing elements and a fear of a socio-spacial division 's growth.
RÉSUMÉ Le thème de la centralité urbaine a fortement évolué, ces dernières années, dans ses définitions et niveaux d'actions : de l'échelle intra-urbaine, considérant la ville comme centralisatrice de besoins, elle parvient au rang inter-urbain dans une géographie de la décision, où se confrontent images valorisantes et concurrence, attraction et développement. Le Mans témoigne bien des mutations politiques et sociales, que connaissent les sociétés urbaines, par des dynamiques polarisantes du centre ville, une déspécialisation de l'espace, un développement axial des éléments porteurs de centralité et une crainte d'un accroissement des segmentations socio-spatiales.
