This paper presents an attempt to construct a chronology for Sabina’s coinage for the revision to the typology of the Roman Imperial Coinage for Hadrian (RIC II. 2). Sabina was omitted from the coinage during the first half of the reign, while imperial ladies such as Plotina and Matidia continued to be so honoured by Hadrian. The situation is completely reversed around the time of the emperor’s adoption of the title pater patriae in AD 128. A regular coinage in Sabina’s name in gold, silver and copper alloy then continues until the end of the reign. Thus for the years AD 128-138 we can trace the development of the empress coinage combining the evolving obverse legend, the changing reverse types and the progress of hairstyle fashion. Comparison to the hairstyles on dated provincial coinage helps to propose a series for the mint of Rome with relatively close dating.
Cet article constitue un essai de reconstruction de la chronologie du monnayage de Sabine dans le cadre de la révision du Roman Imperial Coinage pour le règne d’Hadrien (RIC II. 2). Sabine est absente du monnayage au cours de la première partie du règne, alors que des femmes de la domus impériale telles que Plotine et Matidia sont toujours honorées par Hadrien. La situation s’inverse au moment de l’adoption du titre de pater patriae par Hadrien en 128. Un monnayage continu en or, en argent et en bronze est alors frappé jusqu’à la fin du règne. Ainsi, pour les années 128-138, il est possible de retracer les développements du monnayage de l’impératrice en observant l’évolution des légendes de droit, des types de revers et de la coiffure. La comparaison avec les différents types de coiffures qui s’observent sur le monnayage provincial daté apporte des éléments d’information sur la séquence et sur la date des émissions de Rome.
