À travers une analyse ponctuelle du livre XI de l’Histoire des deux Indes en 1770 et de sa réécriture en 1780, l’article s’attache à évaluer les apports de Pechméja et de Diderot dans ces oeuvres, apports qui ont contribué à en faire, malgré de nombreuses contradictions, une «machine de guerre » contre l’esclavage. Le résultat est tout à fait exceptionnel parmi les ouvrages entièrement consacrés à la colonisation européenne, qui s’attachent le plus souvent aux fastes de cette colonisation. Diderot et Pechméja ont écrit, mais c’est Raynal qui a signé : à chacun son rôle dans cette entreprise extraordinaire, et peu importe si Raynal a plus tard pris ses distances vis-à-vis de sa création protéiforme, en particulier sur le problème de l’esclavage des Noirs. La flèche avait été lancée.
This article evaluates the contribution of Pechméja and Diderot in the two versions for the Book XI of the History of the Two Indias, the first version published in 1770 and the edited version of 1780. Despite many contradictions, those contributions helped to make the book ‘‘ a war machine’’ against slavery. The result is totally exceptional among pieces of work enterily dedicated to European colonisation, and mostly to the greatness of it. Diderot and Pechméja wrote the piece, but Raynal signed it : each of them had a role in this extraordinary enterprise. No matter if Raynal distanced himself from his protean creation, specifically on the problem of Black slavery. The arrow was thrown.
