Enclavement and Development of Irrigated Crops in Burkina Faso. Irrigation is for the countries of the Sahel one of the solutions possible in the struggle against the risks of insufficient rainfall. In Burkina Faso, irrigated crops were introduced during the colonial period an expanded in the 1960’s, before experiencing a more generalized use that integrated them into the system of production of the peasants, and into the national economy. The enclavement of the country limits rapid growth in the production of fruit and vegetables, of wheat an rice, in spite of the large potential of land that can be irrigated. Various measures of support in the domain of fruits and vegetables illustrate some methods of adaptation by which certain of the constraints of enclavement can be turned into advantages.
L’irrigation représente pour les pays du Sahel un des recours dans la lutte contre les aléas de la pluviosité. Au Burkina Faso, les cultures irriguées ont été introduites durant la période coloniale et se sont développées dans les années 1960 avant de connaître une généralisation qui consacre leur intégration aux systèmes de production paysans et à l’économie nationale. L’enclavement du pays s’oppose à l’essor rapide de la production de fruits et légumes, de blé ou de riz, malgré l’importance du potentiel des terres irrigables. De nombreuses mesures de soutien à la filière fruits et légumes illustrent les stratégies d’adaptation par lesquelles certaines contraintes de l’enclavement peuvent devenir des atouts.
