La description des îles éparses de la mer Egée a posé de nombreux problèmes aux géographes grecs qui n'ont su ni les compter, ni à quoi les rattacher, ni dans quel ordre les décrire. Une analyse chronologique de certaines de ces descriptions montre une évolution moins liée à une amélioration des connaissances sur la région qu'à l'élaboration progressive de méthodes descriptives plus pertinentes.
The description of the islands of the Aegean Sea have been the source of numerous problems to the ancient Greek geographers, who were not able either to count them, or to determine what continent to append them to, nor in what order to do so. Chronological analysis of some of these descriptions shows that their evolution is less guided by progress in geographical knowledge of the region than by the progressive elaboration of more congruent descriptive patterns.
