L'examen de nombreux documents inédits, provenant surtout des archives de l'Inquisition romaine et de la Congrégation des Évêques et des Réguliers, montre que l'objectif de garantir la liberté et la facilité de la confession prévalut en Italie sur les exigences du Saint-Office.
