SUMMARY. — Is Jean Cavaillès an historian of Mathematics? History of Science for him does not reduce to a causal succession of psychological and social facts; neither is it a phenomenological history of concepts. In the case of Mathematics, he tries to describe the modalities of an advance in knowledge at the level of the actual productions and transformations of the scientific contents. He seeks to characterize and explain this progress as depending upon a necessity both internal and rational, but not predictable.
RÉSUMÉ. — Jean Cavaillès est-il un historien des mathématiques? Il récuse une assimilation de l'histoire des sciences « aux enchaînements psychologiques et sociaux », aussi bien qu'une histoire « phénoménologique » des concepts. Il s'attache, dans le cas des mathématiques, à montrer les modalités d'un progrès qui s'effectue au niveau de contenus effectifs de la science. Il veut caractériser ce progrès comme nécessité rationnelle, quoique imprédictible, d'un devenir.
