The notion of European civilisation is developed under the Restoration and the July monarchy, thanks essentially to the works of liberal, doctrinaire and eclectic historians and philosophers, but it is also very widespread amongst romantic writers, particularly Victor Hugo circa 1840. This notion is the result of a historisation of the European continent which sets great store by what is long-lasting and enters into competition (but rarely into conflict) with the idea of nationhood. This article studies certain consequences of the use of this notion in history, political theory and geo-political projects and representations. A discussion of the theoretical and practical dangers inherent in the promotion of the history of civilisation(s) to the rank of a global human science concludes.
La notion de civilisation européenne se développe sous la Restauration et la monarchie de Juillet, principalement grâce aux travaux des historiens et philosophes libéraux, doctrinaires et éclectiques, - mais elle est également très répandue chez les écrivains romantiques, surtout chez Victor Hugo aux alentours de 1840. Cette notion résulte d'une historicisation du continent européen, valorise la longue durée, et entre en concurrence (rarement conflictuelle) avec l'idée de nation. On étudie dans cet article quelques conséquences de l'usage de cette notion dans la discipline historique, dans la théorie politique, dans les représentations et les projets géopolitiques. Sont évoqués pour finir les risques théoriques et pratiques inhérents à la promotion de l'histoire de la (ou des) civilisation(s) au rang de science globale du fait humain.
