L'exilé, qui est par définition «hors de soi», offre l'une des figures les plus extrêmes de la représentation de soi-même et des autres. Exclus d'une catégorisation sociale précise, d'un statut juridique défini et d'appartenances culturelles et politiques stables, les proscrits français du Second Empire doivent redéfinir, pour une durée inconnue, leurs manières singulières et collectives d'être-au-monde. Ces reconfigurations qui induisent les discours, les formes d'écritures et les projets politiques se construisent autour d'un incessant va-et-vient entre un je et un nous, entre nous et les autres. Les modalités d'inclusion et d'exclusion dans le passé et le présent, la confrontation permanente avec l'altérité rythment la vie des proscrits. Ces échelles et ces tensions entre représentations permettent peut-être de mieux comprendre les modalités d'une action qui reste circonscrite à un acte de langage.
The exile, who is, by definition, is "outside of themselves ", provides one of the most extreme examples of representation of oneself and others. The French exiles of the Second Empire were excluded from specifie social categorisation, had no defined legal status and did not belong to any stable cultural or political group. For an unspecified period of time they had to redefine their singular and collective ways of existing in the world. This reconfiguration stimulated debate, ways of writing and political projects. It took form around an incessant toing and froing between I and us and us and the others. Ways of being included or excluded in the past and the present, along with a permanent confrontation with otherness, punctuated the lives of these exiles. Perhaps these various scales, and the tension between representations, enable us to better understand the modes of a form of action that remains confined to an act of language.
