An economic history of science and technology. (2) Professionalization of research in the 19th. The long 19th century, between the political revolutions of the end of the 18th and the beginning of the First World War, may be perceived as the take-off era of modern sciences and technology, which then became fundamental variables in the economic and social development of the most advanced countries. It was also during this period that scientists and researchers on the one hand, technicians and engineers on the other, assumed for the first time their contemporary modes and functions. The author focuses on the role played by the universities and other institutions in this process, in the light of what has occurred in France, Britain, Germany and the United States.

Entre las revoluciones politicas de fines del XVIII y la primera Guerra Mundial, el siglo XIX puede verse como un periodo de arranque de las ciencias y de la tecnologia modernas. Las cuales se constituyen como vareables fundamentales del desarrollo economico y social de los paises mas avanzados. Durante este periodo, tanto los cientificos e investigadores como los técnicos e ingenieros tuvieron, por primera vez, que asumir su papel y sus practicas. Aqui se estudia el papel desarrollado, en este proceso, por las universidades y demas instituciones en Francia, Gran Bretana, Alemania y Estados Unidos.
