La traduction est une industrie et s'affirme comme telle. Cependant, elle a du mal à suivre la voie de la normalisation industrielle dans laquelle les autres secteurs se sont résolument engagés. Nous considérons qu'elle se doit de réagir, et massivement, pour empêcher que le domaine ne se trouve envahi par le charlatanisme. C'est la qualité du produit et la crédibilité de l'industrie qui en dépendent. Mais comment intéresser les acteurs de la traduction aux normes ? À notre avis, cette tâche revient naturellement aux universités qui forment les futurs professionnels. Il ne s'agit pas de leur faire ingurgiter de la matière, mais de leur faire prendre conscience qu'industrie et profession ne s'opposent pas, mais vont de pair.
Translation is an industry and presents itself as such. However, it has had some difficulty moving towards industrial standardization, a direction that other sectors have adopted wholeheartedly. We feel that the industry needs to mount a full-scale response to prevent the field from being overrun by charlatanism. At stake are the quality of the product and the credibility of the industry. But how does one interest the players in the translation field in standards ? In our view, the task naturally falls to the universities training future professionals. Success will be achieved not by ramming the subject-matter down their throats but by making them aware that industry and profession are not in opposition but go hand in hand.
