Land management and territoriality in Brazilian Amazonia: state enterprise and garimpeiros in Carajàs. — The Brazilian State controls Eastern Amazonia through its public entreprise CVRD (Companhia do Vale do Rio Doce). The author analyses the territorial strategy of this mining enterprise and the organisation set up around its mines in Serra dos Carajâs in order to protect its «stronghold» and its accesses, and to control the independent prospectors, garimpeiros.
