En dix ans, la cartographie a été bouleversée par les progrès fulgurants de la technique. L'informatique intervient désormais à tous les stade du travail cartographique, de la constitution de banques de données à leur organisation en systèmes d'informations géographiques et à la réalisation automatique de cartes, tout en imposant de nouvelles contraintes. Tous les types de cartes ont bénéficié de cet apport et connu un développement accéléré : fonds cartographie statistique, cartes outil de travail du chercheur et cartes géotechniques appuyant une intervention sur le terrain.
Ten years of geographical cartography 1980-1990. The last decade has seen a revolution in cartography through high-speed technical progress. Computing is now used at every step of the cartography process, from creating data banks to organizing them into geographical information systems and producing automatic maps, involving both new facilities and new constraints. All kinds of maps have benefited from these techniques : basic maps and blanks, "spatiomaps" prepared from remote sensing data, inventory maps, statistical maps, maps conceived as stages in research process or geotechnical maps giving a basis to concrete actions at various scales.
