Cette contribution propose une réflexion sur les concepts de rupture et de permanence relativement à l'évolution d'un système de peuplement. D'un côté on discute des démarches possibles pour élaborer des critères objectifs permettant de qualifier un changement de "rupture". De l'autre on souligne le caractère relatif d'une telle interprétation et la nécessité de référer à un contexte spatiotemporel précis. La réflexion s'appuie sur deux études, l'une relative à l'habitat à une échelle fine dans le Lunellois et la Vaunage de l'Antiquité au Moyen-Âge, l'autre concernant l'évolution du peuplement urbain du 19e siècle à nos jours dans les départements du sud de la France.
This contribution proposes a thinking on the concepts of rupture and permanence applied to the evolution of a settlement system. On the one hand different approaches in order to elaborate objective criteria for qualifying a change as a "rupture" are discussed. On the other hand the relativity of such an interpretation is underlined, and the necessity to refer to a precise spatio-temporal context is emphasised. The discussion relies on two empirical studies. One concerns the changes in the settlement of Lunellois and La Vaunage from the antiquity to the medieval period. The other concerns the evolution of the urban settlement from the 19th century to present time in South France.
